New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre to explain what action it had taken against government-funded shelters as a social audit showed that 1,575 cases of sexual harassment of children had been reported from across the country.
The social audit was conducted by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). The 1,575 cases were reported during the five years till 2016.
A three-judge bench of Justices Madan B. Lokur, Abdul Nazeer and Deepak Gupta asked additional solicitor general Pinky Anand why the Union government had not come out with any proper action plan to deal with the menace though the social audit report had been submitted to the Centre more than a year back.
"…tell us what action have you taken against such homes. There is no point in saying that 1,575 children are subjected to sexual abuse. The 1,575 boys and girls are victims of sexual and physical abuse. What have you done about it? Which are the shelter homes where they are kept? What action the states have taken on this," Justice Lokur asked Anand.
