The police had arrested a youth, Manpreet, along with his wife, seven-month-old baby and his mother, from Baura gate. But later cops had declared that Manpreet had fled, but was allegedly kept in illegal detention till November 30 when he was produced in court. The victim’s only fault was that he had a argument with a tipsy ASI posted at Nabha police station. To expose the fake claims made by cops, Manpreet uploaded a video grab showing his arrest on to a popular video sharing website, after which support for him swelled and on Monday panchayats conducted a meeting at Nabha and passed a resolution.
"Manpreet was mercilessly tortured for around 40 hours for no fault of his, which can be seen in the video. We would start an agitation from Wednesday onwards if there is no action against the guilty cops," said Gurmeet Thuhi, District president of Internationalistic Democratic Party (IDP).
On November 28, Manpreet his wife Charnjit, and his mother Ranjit Kaur were allegedly abused by cops in public view and later male policemen took all of them to the police station. The same night police registered a case under sections 353, 355,186, 332 of IPC against Manpreet and his wife Ranjit, while his mother Charnjit Kaur and seven-month-old baby were released in night around 9 pm after intervention by panchayat members from Ishewal village.
"I was kept in illegal detention and tortured without any fault. I would die, but not withdraw my agitation till action is taken against guilty cops" said Manpreet on Monday. When contacted, Nabha DSP Rajinder Singh Sohal said the matter is under investigations.
