CAG to audit NREGA by September

The former environment minister is making headlines once again. Just a week after taking over Rural Development, minister Jairam Ramesh is all set to make his ministry more transparent. The CAG will be auditing the governments flagship NREGA scheme in a few months.

Sources say Ramesh had extensive discussions with CAG officials today and for the very first time the NREGA scheme will be undergoing an audit in September of this year. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed with the CAG officials early next week.

And it is not just the NREGA, which is on the ministers radar. All schemes under the rural development ministry will be undergoing an audit in an attempt to make the ministry cleaner and more transparent.

In fact, Ramesh has gone ahead and said that next year will be termed as an auditing year for his ministry.

Remember, NREGA gets the maximum number of funds from the government. The rural development ministry has maximum number of funds second only to the defense ministry.

Also, early next week, the new Land Acquisition Act will be put in the public domain by Ramesh’s ministry. This bill will combine the Relief and Rehabilitation Bill.
