Three farmers allegedly committed suicide following damage to their crop due to frost and extreme cold wave conditions in Chhatarpur and Vidisha districts of Madhya Pradesh. The suicides were reported last night. Kunjilal Ahirwar (28) ended his life by hanging self himself to a tree in his field at village Pathada in Chhatarpur district, after frost damaged his crop in five acres, his wife Bhagunti Bai said. In another incident, a farmer of Chhatarpur identified as Lakhan Kushwaha (40) hanged himself at Tapriyan village, after crop failure, his elder brother Dharmdas Kushwaha said. He was upset over non-repayment of Rs 50,000 loan he had taken for sowing a few months back, Kushwaha claimed. Chhatarpur Collector E Ramesh Kumar said the district administration has received reports of suicide and has sent a team to verify the claims. In Vidisha’s Rangai village, a 40-year-old farmer Dalut Singh Kushwaha hanged himself to a tree near his field, police said. He was upset after his name didn’t figure in the list of the farmers entitled to get compensation for crop damage, they said. Besides, he had taken a loan of Rs 25,000, police said, adding investigations were on.
