UID launched in Gumla

Unique identity card (UID) project, an initiative of the Unique Identification Authority of India, was launched here on Friday. It was initiated by deputy commissioner Rahul Sharma who would be the first person to receive it in the district. 
The ambitious plan aims to provide a 12-digit identification number which will be stored in a centralized database and linked to the basic demographics and biometric information photograph, ten fingerprints and iris of each individual. 
Sixteen groups of Wipro which has been designated to execute the project in Gumla, Dhanbad, Giridih, Palamu, Garwa arrived here on Friday. Three to four groups will work in the township, while the rest will go to villages. It is expected that 800 persons will be covered under the project per day in the district, said Sharma. 
UID card, also known as Aadhaar , will be prepared on the basis of national population register and will come handy for migrants, execution of MGNREGA and other schemes besides welfare measures, he added.
