HC notice to chief secy for job quota violation

Gauhati high court has issued showcause notices to the state chief secretary and more than 20 government departments for allegedly violating job reservation rules of tribal candidates.

"The high court has issued a showcause notice to the chief secretary and more than 20 departments on January 10," said Aditya Khakhlari, the general secretary of All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) on Thursday. He added that the court has issued the showcause notice after hearing a PIL filed by his organisation in the court.

He alleged that the state government has shown utter negligence in the ST reservation policy meant for filling up vacant posts meant for tribals in various government departments.

According to AATS, 1,549 posts, which were reserved for the Schedule Tribe (Plains) people are still vacant. Another 1,547 posts for ST (hills) candidates are also vacant. "We demand the government to fill them up soon," said Khaklari.

On the other hand, the tribal body alleged that state government reserved 59 posts of police inspectors in 2009. "Pramila Rani Brahma, the minister concerned for the welfare of plain tribes, must be conscious about our demands," said an AATS leader.
