Country’s only movie on RTI shown in Mumbai by Ashutosh Shukla

‘Ek Cup Chya’, India’s first and only movie on the Right to Information Act, was screened by PCGT, an NGO working with RTI on Friday at the Indian Merchant Chambers.

The film, which is in Marathi with English sub-titles, was made in 2009 by national award-winning directors Sumithra Bhave and Sunil Sukhtankar and produced by Dr Yashwant Oak.

It features well-known Marathi actors like Kishore Kadam, Sunil Sukhthankar, Devika Daftardar, Ashwini Giri and Madan Deodhar and was shot in the interiors of the Konkan region. The film’s main character is a bus conductor, who ends up with a disconnected power supply before his son’s board exams because of corruption. When he approaches the electricity board, he is asked for bribes and made to run around. Unsure of how he should face the situation, he hesitates in filing an RTI application.

But a meeting with an RTI activist transforms him, and under his guidance, he emerges victorious in his fight against corruption. “It is the success of the RTI Act that we are trying to show,” added Oak.
