Insurance cover extended for workers under NREGS

The officials of the labour department decided to extend accidental insurance cover to 12,000 workers who worked 100 days in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) works.

These workers will get accidental insurance cover up to Rs 2 lakh. They are eligible for pension scheme also implemented by the labour department. The women workers are entitled for maternity benefit. If they contribute to the pension fund, they will get pension. If the worker is injured or if he becomes handicapped he will get a compensation up to Rs 75,000.

The workers in the NREGS also come under the category for social security. The labour department has taken the initiative to extend insurance cover to the workers in the brick-making industry also. The labour department entered into an agreement with the zilla samakhyas to enrol the names of the workers who worked for 100 days in the NREGS and brick-making industry also. The joint commissioner of labour, Mr M.N. Varahala Reddy, said a GO was issued to extend pension scheme to the workers in the construction field.
