Jobless rate surges as factories slump

Highest unemployment rate since August 2016

Mumbai: The gloom and doom scenario in India’s economy darkened a little more on Friday after an independent database company threw up an alarming statistic: the unemployment rate in October had surged to 8.48 per cent — the highest since August 2016.

The Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) — a respected private researcher — said the unemployment rate in urban India was 8.89 per cent and in the rural sector, 8.28 per cent.
