Five per cent of Indian children are overweight and 10% pre-diabetic.
Even as Indian children continue to grapple with undernutrition, the first-ever national nutrition survey of children and adolescents shows a growing risk of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease, with many showing early signs of these diseases.
Almost one in 10 children, between 5 years to 9 years, were found to be pre-diabetic and 1% were already diabetic, according to the government’s Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey, released on October 8. About 5% of children and adolescents, between 5 years and 19 years, were overweight, the survey found.
