NEW DELHI: With parties gearing up to enter ‘election mode’ for assembly elections, politicians are not leaving any stone unturned to woo voters. The BJP-led south corporation has cleared the proposal to make the process of issuance of birth and death certificates free of cost.

According to the proposal, the certificates will be available via websites and through zonal offices without paying any charges. The move, if implemented, will directly benefit those who earlier had to approach touts for getting their certificates.

SDMC mayor Sunita Kangra said that the move is being undertaken to provide relief to a large number of people who are forced to take rounds of offices for their certificates. “The fee is nominal so it won’t impact our revenues, but the relief people will feel in terms of time spent and rounds of offices they have to undertake is massive. We plan to deliver the free copies within a month from the event.”

Dr Nandini Sharma, councillor from Malviya Nagar, had kept this proposal in the health committee. After being approved by the health committee, the proposal was sent to the house and it has received a majority’s assent via voice vote. Since this was a private members’ resolution and the preamble was not put up by the health department, the proposal will now be referred to the commissioner.
