NEW DELHI: Heavy rains and floods have claimed 537 human lives across six states in the current monsoon season. Maharashtra is the worst affected with 139 fatal casualties so far, followed by Kerala with 126 deaths, West Bengal with 116, UP with 70, Gujarat with 52 and Assam with 34 deaths, according to data maintained by the home ministry’s National Emergency Response Centre.
Another 13 persons are reported missing in the wake of monsoon-related disasters.
As many as 26 districts in Maharashtra, which has received 99.30mm rainfall so far, have witnessed the vagaries of monsoon this season. In West Bengal, monsoon-related disasters were reported in 22 districts, while 21 districts are affected in Assam. Rains and floods have caused casualties and widespread damage in 14 districts in Kerala, 10 in Gujarat and 1 district of Uttar Pradesh.
Kerala has reported 1451.85mm rainfall so far this monsoon season, Assam 585.70mm, Gujarat 449.92mm and UP 171.1mm.
