Two sisters, aged 17 and 13, were shot dead in Etawah in Uttar Pradesh on Monday night by a man who was stalking the elder sister for several months now. He had been booked by the police in an FIR, but got out on bail. The younger girl was shot as she was a witness to her sister’s murder.

This is just a continuation of a series of crimes against women r eported from UP even as Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who holds the Home portfolio as well, conceded in a written answer to the legislative assembly last month that such crimes had indeed risen in the past one year.

As per this answer given on March 13, there has been a 25% increase in rapes, 40% rise in incidents of outraging the modesty, 35% jump in cases of kidnappings of women, and a 50% increase in cases of eve teasing between April 1, 2017, and January 31, 2018, from the corresponding period in 2016-17 under the then Samajwadi Party government.

Adityanath on Wednesday said the state is sending a proposal to Centre to amend law to make rape crime against minors punishable with death sentence.
