Death by hanging viable

-The Telegraph

New Delhi: The Centre on Tuesday told the Supreme Court that there was no viable method of executing death-row convicts other than hanging by the noose, but agreed to look into other options.

According to the Centre, although the petitioner has suggested the use of lethal injections as an alternative, the government is not in favour of that mode as it appears "unworkable".

"Today, there is no viable method other than hanging. Lethal injection as an option is unworkable," additional solicitor-general Pinky Anand told a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra.

Anand, however, sought four weeks from the court for placing on record an affidavit to explain the Centre’s stand.

Anand made the submission in response to a plea by Rishi Malhotra, an advocate, who informed the court that the government must explore lethal injections as an alternative method as, according to him, it is less painful. He told the court that at least 25 states in the US had adopted this mode of execution.
