New Delhi: A mother of newborn twins has challenged in the Supreme Court the RBI’s decision not to accept demonetised notes till March 31 in spite of the Prime Minister giving such an assurance to the nation.

Sudha Mishra, through her counsel Animesh Kumar, pleaded that she was expecting in November last year when the demonetisation was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Delhi-based Mishra was then at her parental home in Ranchi for the delivery of the twins, the petition said.

According to her petition, Mishra was married in early 2016 and had received substantial amount of cash in 500-rupee and 1,000-rupee notes as " stridhan".

In his address to the nation on November 8, the Prime Minister had said: "There may be some who, for some reason, are not able to deposit their old 500 or 1,000 rupee notes by 30th December 2016. They can go to specified offices of the Reserve Bank of India up to 31st March 2017 and deposit the notes after submitting a declaration form."
