Centre gives Rs 3050 crore to drought-hit Maharashtra, Rs 2033 crore to Madhya Pradesh -Vishwa Mohan

NEW DELHI: The Centre on Tuesday approved financial relief assistance of Rs 3050 crore for drought-hit Maharashtra and Rs 2033 crore for Madhya Pradesh. The financial assistance will be given to these states from the National Disaster Relief Fund (NDRF).

The decision was taken by a high-level committee after examining the proposals based on the report of the central team which visited the severe drought affected states in November.

In all 18 of the total 29 states are affected by drought due to deficit Monsoon this year. While Madhya Pradesh had declared 41 out of 51 districts as drought affected, Maharashtra reported drought in 20 of its 36 districts.

The other affected states include Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. Karnataka and Chhattisgarh have already been sanctioned relief assistance of Rs 1540 crore and Rs 1672 crore respectively for the year 2015-16. Karnataka had, however, demanded Rs 3830 crore from the Centre.
