India fares quite badly in the world when it comes to nutrition. It’s ranked 55th among 76 emerging economies on the Global Hunger Index, 2014, lower than even Ghana, Iraq, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

As many as 2.3 crore of the eight crore children below 6 years of age who attend Anganwadis are malnourished, according to a status report on the ICDS.

Nearly 59% children under 5 are anaemic as are more than half the pregnant women. At least 62% of the country’s population is vitamin A deficient while 25% is iodine deficient.

These figures make for depressing reading, particularly when the Women and Child Development ministry has just "celebrated" the National Nutrition Week in early September.
