LUCKNOW: The Samajwadi Party government in Uttar Pradesh may be blaming it on political conspiracy for the "selective focus" on crimes in Uttar Pradesh but here are cold statistics – the latest data from National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) reveals that total number of crime incidents have risen to 21 lakh in 2013 from 18 lakh in 2012, when the party came to power.
Crime against women escalated to 32,546 cases in 2013 as compared to the 23,569 in 2012. In the last year of Mayawati’s rule – 2011 – the figure stood at 22,369.
There were 1,983 cases of rape reported in 2012 while in 2013 it rose to 3,050.
In 2013, 9,737 women were kidnapped while in 2012,this figure was 7,910. Dowry deaths accounted for 2,335 lives in 2013 while it was 2,244 in 2012.
There was a marked increase in atrocities against Dalits. There were 7,078 crime cases registered for crime against Scheduled Castes in 2012 to 6,202 in the previous year. UP is followed by Bihar and Rajasthan in number of cases of atrocities against Dalits.
