NHRC notice to UP police for beating up three-year-old-J Balaji

In yet another instance of highhandedness and inhuman behaviour, the Uttar Pradesh police severely beat up the three-year-old daughter of an under-trial prisoner just because he took the child in his arms. He was trying to pacify the child, who had started crying when the police took him intocustody at the court premises.

Upset with the media report regarding the incident, the National Human Rights Commission, which suo motu took cognisance of the case, issued notice to the Bulandshahar Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), seeking a report within four weeks. The SSP was also asked what disciplinary action had been taken against the policeman.

The incident reportedly happened on the court premises of Additional District Judge, Khurja, on May 2 this year. The prisoner, lodged in the District Jail, Bulandshahar, was brought to the court in connection with the hearing of his case. His family was there as well. After the hearing, seeing her father leaving in police custody, the daughter started crying. The father could not resist himself and took her in his arms. Reportedly, this action enraged the policemen so much that they not only forcibly took the daughter away from the father, but also severely beat her.
