Hisar: Members of the Dalit community on Thursday staged a protest in Hisar, demanding judicial inquiry into the suicide pact of a missing rape victim’s family at Bheri Akbarpur village in Uklana, 50 km from here.
Ashok Kumar, a Balmiki leader, said: "The inhuman treatment of police had forced the family to take the extreme step. We demand judicial probe into the incident. The government should provide best treatment to the victim’s father, the lone survivor after the suicide pact."
Umed Lohan, district president of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD), who also joined the protest to express solidarity with Dalits, said: "Instead of looking for the girl, the police pressurised the family to withdraw the case. The poor family was already under stress after their daughter went missing."
The protesters also demanded adequate compensation to the aggrieved family and appropriate action against the cops who "tormented" the family.
