The ministry of home affairs has ordered an inquiry into the repulsive video showcasing Anadaman aborogines – Jarawa tribe – forced to dance nude for food before foreign tourists.
“The video, we have inquired, was on the internet for the last 4-5 years. But we have ceased off the matter and taking congnisance, have ordered an inquiry into it by the Anadaman and Nicobar administration and UT (union territory) division.
“Besides, we have also issued specific instructions to protect the rights, culture and customs of the native tribes of A&N Islands,” said union home secretary, RK Singh.
Taking extra measures to keep the tribals safe, the Centre has ordered an increase of 5km radius, in the sea protection zone surrounding A&N Islands. The 5km radius, translating into approx 1,200sq km, will be over and above the existing protection zone of 800sq km, plus 1,200sq km, sources said.
The ministry, however, has sent the controversial video footage to the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO), to ascertain its authenticity and age.
The video footage, sources said, was uploaded on the net by a foreign NGO, to bring the exploitation of Jarawa tribals to the fore. The nearly extinct tribals (said to be 403 on last count) were allegedly forced to dance nude before the tourists in return for food.
The footage has been condemned as “obnoxious and disgusting” by union tribal affairs minister, V Kishore Chandra Deo. Union home minister, P Chidambaram, is also expected to take up the issue during his visit to the Islands, on January 21, to oversee the Tsunami relief work and future preparations.
