Govt proposes `2000 cr labour budget under NREGA

Government has proposed a Rs 2000 crore labour budget under MG NREGA for the coming fiscal year.

This was revealed at a high level meeting convened under the chairmanship of Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Ali Muhammad Sagar here today.

Commissioner Secretary Rural Development, Farooq Ahmad Peer, Director Rural Development Jammu, Shafiq Ahmad Raina, Member Secretary MG NREGA, Dr Hanief Balkhi and other senior officers of the department were present.

It was also decided in the meeting that a separate Directorate of Social Audits would be set up which would ensure full transparency in the implementation of the scheme which has become one of the most important programmes providing employment  to the people living in rural and far-flung areas.

Sagar asked the concerned authorities to ensure that the loopholes, if any in the implementation of the same should be checked so that the benefit of the same percolates to the targeted beneficiaries, an official statement said.

He said: “We should also see to it that the funds earmarked under the scheme are utilized to the maximum so that more projections can be made for the coming fiscal year.”

The Minister also directed the Commissioner Secretary to conduct tours of different villages across the State in order to have on-spot assessment of the works being undertaken under the scheme so that a proper monitoring and feedback is also ensured.
