Rs 2,700 crore left unspent on tribals

Despite huge allocation of funds for tribal upliftment, a whopping sum of Rs 2700 crore is still left unspent in tribal dominated Madhya Pradesh.
The unspent funds are 14 per cent of the total allocated budget. The above revelations came into light after a study carried out by ‘Sanket’, an organisation that works on budget allocation.
Under Tribal sub-plan every year, budget is allocated to 37 against 53 administrative departments.
Sanket carried out the study on the budget allocation between 2001-02 and 2009-10. During the study it was observed that against a sum of Rs 19, 258 crore allocated for the tribal upliftment, Rs 2,695 crore remained unspent.
In the year 2009-10 alone, Rs 910 crore was left without spending.
Despite special provisions, very less is being spent on the tribals in comparison to the amount spent on other citizens.
Defending the department, Finance minister Raghavji said, “Several reasons can be behind the amount left unspent. It is very common if 14-15 per cent of the amount goes unspent as the tribal sub-plan is quite big.”
