Northeast rebels at Ramlila by Nishit Dholabhai

Anna Hazare’s movement has got support from at least two Northeast outfits that till a few years ago had been wielding Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Dilip Nunisa, chairman of the Dima Halam Daoga (pro-talks) group that is in a peace pact with the Centre, was at Ramlila Maidan today with his deputy Yathong and publicity secretary S. Langthasa.

“We could not meet Annaji but met some other leaders of his team and expressed support,” the DHD leader said.

The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Progressive) also extended support. “We support Annaji as we are also against corruption and want the Prime Minister to be under this Lokpal bill,” S. Sanjarang, the outfit’s publicity secretary, said from Assam.

A text message from the outfit said the “NDFB(P) warmly welcomes” the activist’s “clarion call… for a joint stand” against “corruption in the country” and “extends its moral support and solidarity” with the movement.

The banned Ulfa struck a cautious note. Vice-chairman Pradeep Gogoi said although his outfit did not support Anna directly, it did want to root out corruption. “The system must be changed, mindsets must be changed,” he said.
