CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan asked the Home department to begin the process after Shehla’s family called on the DGP seeking a probe by a Central agency. The family said they did not trust the local police.
The FSL and post mortem reports had said that a single shot had been fired from a very close range when the car windows were closed. The relatives, however, confronted the investigators saying she was found holding a mobile phone in one hand and car keys in the other.
The decision also had to do with a visit paid to the grieving family by Congress leaders who said they would meet the PM seeking a probe by a Central agency.
On Wednesday, Union Minister Jairam Ramesh wrote to Chouhan seeking a probe to find Shehla’s killer, or killers. The activist was in regular touch with the minister when he held the Environment and Forests portfolio. Since the police maintained that there were no eyewitnesses and had made no headway in the case till Thursday, speculations over the motive were rife.
