1.55 lakh get identity cards under MNREGS

PERAMBALUR: About 1.55 lakh persons have registered under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in the district and all of them have been issued with identity cards, said Collector Darez Ahmed here on Tuesday.

Mr.Ahmed, who inspected various works taken up under the scheme in Veppanthattai panchayat union, said works worth Rs.56.64 crore would be executed under the MGNREGS in the district during the current financial year. The works would be implemented in 314 villages spread over 20 panchayats in Perambalur panchayat union, 29 in Veppanthattai, 39 in Alathur, 33 in Veppur union in the district. Administrative sanction have been already been issued for 739 works.

Among the beneficiaries who have been issued identity cards, bank accounts have been opened for about 1.38 lakh persons. Steps have been taken to open accounts for the remaining 17,022 beneficiaries.

During the previous financial year, about 1.13 lakh beneficiaries have been provided employment under the scheme.

Mr.Ahmed inspected the progress of improvement works on the Amman Kovil tank at Venbavur, sanctioned at a cost of Rs.24 lakhs under the scheme.

He enquired with the beneficiaries whether they were receiving correct and prompt wages.
