Over 90,000 tonnes seed certified

The Department of Organic and Seed Certification has certified 93,552 tonnes seed from the paddy, millets, pulses, cotton, oil seeds and vegetable varieties.

The purpose behind certifying the seeds was to convey to the farmers that they could be assured of the purity of the seeds, the department said in a press release. The purity of the seeds had been maintained and that they were of good quality.

The Seed Certification Department carried out the certification work in notified varieties and hybrids in accordance with the various provisions of The Seeds Act, 1966 and The Seed Rules, 1968. After acceptance of the sowing reports, the Seed Certification Officers inspected the seed farm in different stages – vegetative, flowering and harvesting – to confirm the standards. Harvest was permitted in the fields that met the standards.

The samples were tested in the notified seed testing laboratories.

The release also said that in the processed lots, the seed samples were drawn by the Officers for quality check. The samples were tested in the notified seed testing laboratories.
