Justice Balakrishnan, facing a rough weather following allegations of his family members having amassed illegal wealth, made these statements in his affidavit filed before the additional commissioner of IT in Kochi.
The affidavit, submitted in response to an RTI appeal filed by T Balachandran of Kochi seeking details of I-T returns filed by him and his family members to the IT, also gives out the details of his assets.
The former CJI had taken the stand earlier that the details of his IT returns should not be disclosed and he had written to the IT authorities about it. The IT authorities had in February last declined to reveal details of tax returns filed by Justice Balakrishnan and his family members, on the RTI application filed by Balachandran.
The latest affidavit of Justice Balakrishnan is in response to the appeal filed by Balachandran before the IT additional commissioner against the earlier decision of the IT authorities.
"It was reported in the media that I’m opposed to disclosure of the contents of IT returns as I want to suppress the details of my accumulated wealth and assets," said Justice Balakrishnan.
