Ranchi meeting to scan Ansari death

A meeting will be held here on April 13 to further discuss the recent murder of MGNREGA whistle blower Niyamat Ansari by Maoists in Latehar district to be attended by human rights activists and civil society members.

The long-standing debate on Ansari’s character and the role played by him has drawn attention of human rights activists from all over the country. The MGNREGA activist was killed at a time when he had unearthed embezzlement of Rs 2.5 lakh in the central scheme following which an FIR was filed against Manika BDO Kailash Sahu and panchayat sevak Basudev Nagesia.

The meeting based on "Niyamat’s killing truth and justice" is being organized by civil society group under the banner of Daman-Bhrashtachar Virodhi Manch formed soon after the killing of MGNREGA activist Lalit Mehta in Palamu in 2008.

While villagers from Kope panchayat of Jerua village have been invited to attend the meeting to give details about threats issued to Ansari and his associate Bhukhan Singh, the statement issued by Maoists after his killing will also be discussed. "Based on newspaper reports that reflect the opinion of rebels, we would like to seek details from the villagers and bring to fore the real situation prevailing in the village," said member of the manch Balram.

Right activists including founder of National Alliance of People’s Movement Ramon Magsaysay awardee Sandeep Pandey, national committee member of People Union for civil liberties Kavita Srivastava, activist and advisor Rajkishore, member national advisory council and MGNREGA champion Jean Dreze will deliberate on the basic rights of people engaged in exposing corruption.
