Samajwadi Party seeks CBI probe into MGNREGA irregularities

The Samajwadi Party, Balangir unit, on Friday demanded a CBI inquiry into the irregularities in MGNREGS and PDS in Khaprakhol block of Balangir district.

The party citing how thousands of people from this region migrate due to irregularities in wage payments and bungling in PDS, submitted a memorandum to Governor M C Bhandare.

Led by the party’s district president Arun Mishra, thousands of people gathered at the block office and demanded a CBI inquiry into corruption in MGNREGS. Mishra said while the government website shows completion of several projects and people enjoying the benefits, the situation is just the reverse.

"Contrary to what the officials claim on paper or in the web site, several pockets of Khaprakhol block are still facing the worst condition and no benefit is reaching the poor there. We demand a CBI inquiry into the irregularities," said Mishra.

He said even after five members of a family died in this block due to starvation two years ago, the government hasn’t paid any attention to the issue. He also pointed out that the forest produce, which is available aplenty here and which supports the livelihood of the villagers, is going into the hands of unscrupulous contractors who exploit them.
