NREGA workers to stage dharna in Delhi by Raakhi Jagga

Thousands of workers from the state employed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) will protest outside Parliament on March 30. The members,of the NREGA worker union from Punjab, allege widespread corruption in the scheme and poor working conditions.

“NREGA was implemented from April 1, 2008. As per rules, job cards should have been made by that time, but even now many workers are running from pillar to post to get their cards . Panchayats in Punjab are asking for money from workers to get these cards made. This is a scandal worth crores and needs to be investigated,” said Jai Singh, president of the union. He added that despite it being compulsory for payments to be made in 15 days, the workers were yet to receive their wages for 2009-10.

Suresh Kumar, another member of the union said, “Even after having job cards, the workers are not being given work and their applications are not entertained by village panchayats. The employees are charged money to get their bank accounts opened.”

The union members demanded a noon break from 3 pm as temperatures are likely to cross 40 degrees in summer. They allege that the village panchayats don’t provide drinking water and medical help. The union urged the state government to discuss the issue and take necessary action.
