Land acquisition case: Manesar farmers to gherao Parliament

Protesting against the states land acquisition programme, farmers from nine villages near the IMT, decided on Sunday that they would organize a mass demonstration near the Parliament house in New Delhi on the March 2.

More than a thousand people from over 50 villages of the nearby region are expected to participate in the demonstration.

The controversial land acquisition issue has already been forwarded to the chief minister of state, with the mediation of the new deputy commissioner of Gurgaon last week. But suspicious of any imminent resolution, the farmers have been preparing for mass protests in Delhi, mainly to get the Centres help and attention. If the acquisition is not stopped, we will do a gherao (encirclement) of Parliament house on March 2, and ensure that our voice is heard, said Ram Kishan, one of the farmers present at the meeting today.

The protest was earlier supposed to be held on February 28, but was postponed as the date coincided with the announcement of the Union budget for the year.

We have people coming over from more than 50 villages of the region in support, said another farmer and protester, Pradeep.

The protest follows the agitation by a 1000-strong crowd of villagers who blocked the NH-8 near Pachgaon Chowk last week.
