Panel team to probe farmers’ suicide in Orissa

The Centre has decided to send a team of the Planning Commission to the State to find out the reason behind large number farmer suicides.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told this to a group of Youth Congress leaders from the State, led by president Pradip Majhi, who met him in Delhi on Saturday.

The delegation told the Prime Minister that more than 2,000 farmers had committed suicide in Orissa during last 10 years.

Sources said Singh assured the delegation that the Centre would not discriminate against Orissa where farmers suffered heavy crop loss due to untimely rains in December last year.

The Youth Congress leaders demanded an interim relief for the farmers of Orissa as has been done in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.

Union Minister of State for Agriculture, KV Thomas will visit Orissa soon to assess the crop loss. A Central team had already been to the State in this regard.

OPCC president KP Singhdeo had apprised Thomas of the ground realities on Saturday and requested him to visit the State.

A State Congress team had already met the Prime Minister in this connection.

The Orissa Pradesh Kissan Khet Mazdoor Congress (OPKKMC) has threatened to launch a Statewide agitation unless the State Government waived agricultural loans of the affected farmers in 15 days.

OPKKMC chairman Amiya Patnaik demanded  village as the unit for assessing the crop loss and the State government purchase remaining paddy with Rs 500 bonus per quintal.

The OPKKMC also sought a White Paper on the situation with information on the steps to be taken for the benefit of the farmers in the ensuing days.

Patnaik alleged that though hundreds of crores of rupees have been released by the Centre under various schemes during the last five years, the condition of farmers in Orissa has not improved.
