Joshi slams Gujarat for NREGA corruption

Union Rural Development Minister C P Joshi on Saturday said the Gujarat government has not been able to implement the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Grantee Act schemes up to the mark.

Joshi, who is also the president of the Rajasthan Cricket Association, was in Vadodara to watch the Ranji Trophy tie between Rajasthan and Vadodara.

“There have been complaints from Gujarat about the implementation of the NREGA schemes and during the investigations we have come to know there are loopholes in the implementation and the money is not reaching the right people. We have also been informed that the Gujarat government is spending the money sent from Centre for the NREGA schemes for the salary for the forest department staff,” Joshi said.

The minister also alleged corruption at among lower-level officials involved in the implementation of the NREGA schemes.

“It is the duty of the Gujarat government to keep a check on the misuse of the funds sent for the NREGA schemes. There have been complaints of widespread corruption. The scheme is meant to benefit the poor people from the tribal areas but it is unfortunate it is not happening in Gujarat,” he said.
