TN Ninan is president of Editors Guild by K Balchand

The Chairman and Editorial Director of Business Standard, T.N. Ninan, has been elected president of the Editors Guild of India which, in the wake of the Radia tapes, called upon editors to place integrity above all other considerations.

Commi Kapoor of Indian Express was retained as general secretary at the annual general body meeting held here on Friday. Suresh Bafna of Nai Duniya was elected treasurer.

Mr. Ninan succeeds Rajdeep Sardesai of CNN-IBN, while Mr. Bafna takes over from senior editor Rohit Bansal. Veteran journalist Kuldip Nayar thanked the outgoing team on behalf of the guild members.

Concern was raised over the failure of some well-known editors in following the best practices in journalism, following the revelations made by the Radia tapes. The guild maintained that it had affected the credibility of the media in general.

It appealed to all editors to always act in a manner that placed the integrity of media operations above all other considerations.

In its continuing campaign against paid news, the Guild decided to post on its website from February 1 the names of those members who sign affidavits pledging against indulging in this pernicious practice. The general body agreed to grant a month’s grace period to ensure that all its members actually received the circular for signing the affidavit.
