1247 girls from Malda trafficked by Subhro Maitra

Sixteen-year-old Rubina Khatun (name changed) of Jinarditola village in Malda’s Kaliachak-II had an affair with Raisuddin, a local boy. Although the affair did not meet with approval from her parents, especially as her Class X exam was near, she was obstinate.

On October 16, Rubina’s father, Saifuddin Sk, lodged a complaint with the local police station, alleging that Raisuddin had taken his daughter away. A police search did not yield any result, nor did Raisuddin come back to the village.

When everybody had given up hope, police got news that Rubina was found in a red-light area of Mumbai. An NGO had managed to trace her and a team from the Malda police managed to rescue her.

While Rubina’s story had a happy ending, another similar complaint was lodged at Kaliachak police station. Nuhu Sk of Rajnagar in Kaliachak lodged a complaint on June 10 that his daughter Sabina Khatun, 14, was abducted by one Muklesh Sk of the village. It was learnt that Muklesh had taken away Sabina to Delhi, promising to marry her. Muklesh was allegedly assisted by two more youths Imran and Ajmal. Before taking her to Delhi, she had been kept at a house at Malda’s Samsi, where she was repeatedly raped. This continued after she was taken to Delhi. During this entire period, Nuhu had been in Mumbai, working as a migratory labourer.

On December 18, Sabina was left alone at Farakka station, from where she managed to return home. Hearing the details from her, Nuhu lodged a fresh complaint against Muklesh and his father Majed with Kaliachak police on December 21.

On December 25, Adyaprasad Roy of Bamangola lodged a police complaint that his daughter Khushi Roy, 14, did not return home from school since December 21. A police search, however, could not trace Khushi.

According to police, 1170 girls who had gone missing between January and November this year from Malda have not been traced yet. A total of 1247 missing diaries had been lodged with police in this period, of which police have managed to successfully trace only 77 girls.
