Shocked by meagre compensation, farmer dies in bank by M Venkateswara Rao

A farmer died of broken heart over meagre assistance that he got from the government for the crop loss he suffered two years ago.

Venna Peddaseshi Reddy (50) of Peddagarlapadu village, 15 km away from here, raised paddy, cotton and red chilli on two acres of his own land and two more acres on lease as a tenant. He lost all the three crops due to the rains in October and November this year. He was left with a debt of Rs. 2 lakh and survived the shock.

But he received a message from revenue officials on Thursday that he was sanctioned a compensation of Rs. 900 for red chilli crop he had lost two years ago. He went to the bank to receive that assistance, but all that he got was Rs. 400. When he enquired, the bankers told him that they had deducted Rs. 500 towards opening of the account. When they shoved four notes of Rs. 100 into his hands, he collapsed at the counter itself.
