Inefficient PDS scheme troubles poor people

Irregularities in the public distribution system (PDS) are rampant in the district due to lack of an effective vigilant mechanism.

Fair price shop dealers, who are allegedly having nexus with politicians and bureaucrats, are diverting essential commodities to the black market.

There are 2,600 fair price shops across the district and about 11 lakh poor families benefit with these.

The vigilance and enforcement officials conducted several raids and unearthed illegally hoarded subsidised rations in the district but the officials have reappointed tainted officials as well as dealers.

The vigilance officials said that some dealers had made false entries in stock registers and accounts were manipulated to rob public money.

Recently, the officials raided and caught red handed several dealers in Atmakur and Narpala mandals but the racket goes unabated across the district.

It is learnt that the dealers are selling essential commodities only for two days a month on the pretext of poor stock and have illegally hiked 50 paise to Rs 1 per kilogram on essential commodities.

Dealers reportedly possess about 2 lakh fake ration ca-rds in the district. As a resu-lt, food grains are not given to the cardholder as per the entitlement in full quantity.

The government has made it mandatory for dealers to supply 2 litres kerosene to Deepam scheme beneficiaries and 6 litres kerosene to below poverty line families but subsidised kerosene is diverted to the black market.
