This scheme was kicked off on Tuesday at Ramoowala village by Deputy Commissioner Dr S Karuna Raju, who said, “the basis of this act is to provide employment to people where they live. Link roads crisscrossing the countryside are becoming narrower by the day thanks to encroachments. Hence we decided to get these roads cleared of encroachments and at the same time involved the villagers under the MGNREGA.”
In the first phase of the project, 75 link roads measuring 278 kilometres will be cleared in Kotkapura block alone. The total cost of this plan is Rs 36.43 lakh.
Sukhdev Singh, Angrez Singh, Avtar Singh and Nirmal Singh, some of the villagers who joined the work force on Tuesday, said they had assured the district administration that the work would be done in the stipulated time.
“This work of clearing the link roads and strengthening the road berms with sand has provided employment to so many unemployed people of our villages. The physically challenged and women who could travel outside the village are also working here,” they said.
The Deputy Commissioner has instructed his officials, “to ensure that the people working on these roads are provided clean drinking water and tea on time. Handicapped persons working on these projects too should be given special care.”
