NREGA: Probe exposes several anomalies

Investigation by government officials into Re 1 being paid as wages to NREGA workers at Gudaliya village in Tonk district have brought to the fore large-scale anomalies. The assistant engineer in his report has accepted the fact that though the total expense of the work done in the village is worth only Rs 60,810 but Rs 4,80,472 were paid.

“This clearly exposes the fact that false ‘measuring’ books were filed and payments were made in the village. The anomaly is worth Rs 4.2 lakh. The government should take action against the engineer and file an FIR against him,” says Nikhil Dey of the Suchna Evum Rozgar Ka Adhikar Abhiyan.

“The report also says the engineer who endorsed payments of Re 1, 7, 12 and 19 had visited the spot on May 19 and found that the register recorded the presence of 150 persons when only 69 were working. This means that there were 44 persons whose names were falsely recorded. The question is that when the asst engineer was present and he saw that the names were falsely recorded then why did he not take action immediately. This clearly proves his and the mate’s involvement,” he said.
