The Communist Party of India on Tuesday said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s remark about the Supreme Court on grain distribution was uncalled for and the court order has to be understood in the proper spirit.
“It is not an issue of the Supreme Court exceeding its jurisdiction and transgressing into the domain of the executive. One has to understand the proper spirit and the language of the order,” the party’s central secretariat said in a statement here.
The party wanted to know whether lakhs of tonnes of grain be allowed to rot while millions of poor were starving and whether the executive should not consider the matter in this spirit and devise immediate mechanism for distributing it among the poor. The argument that distribution of food grains among the poor was not possible or farmers would be affected was far-fetched. The issue should not be confused with the Below Poverty Line (BPL) quota and BPL price.
