Promotion of menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls in rural areas and introducing bio-markers in annual health survey were some of the crucial decisions taken during the meeting of the core group of the National Rural Health Mission today.
The meeting of the Mission Steering Committee (MSG) of the NRHM, held under the chairmanship of Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, approved a proposal for promotion of menstrual hygiene for adolescent girls in rural areas of 150 districts across the country at a cost of nearly Rs 150 crore.
The idea of improving the menstrual hygiene among adolescent girls was conceived by UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the steering committee implemented it, Azad told reporters after the meeting.
The MSG approved engagement of male health workers in 235 high-focus districts on contractual basis, with a commitment by the states to take over the responsibility thereafter.
